Herb Garden

Saturday morning as J. was getting dressed to go out, he opened his eyes and he screamed, "amatxu, the herbs!". He seemed so upset over something. I asked him to explain it to me calmly. It turns out, he had forgotten the herbs he had picked at school the day before in his cubby. "Don't worry, we will get them on Monday".

So this morning when I walked him into school, he went straight to his cubby and took out the bunch of herbs he had picked the week before. Dried by now, of course. So I took him by the hand and went back to where they had planted their garden and got some fresh ones. Dill, mint, chives, thyme, basil... A lovely garden and really showed me that even at this young age, kids have a nurturing spirit.

Happy Monday!

Are growing herbs easy? I think that an herb garden is exactly what I need, though it might rain too much in Washington to make it possible.

You know I love it that more schools are creating these lovely simple gardens where kids can really develop that nurturing spirit. And how cute that he was so upset about it. Too adorable.

How sweet! I think it's such a wonderful thing to see kids engaging with the earth in a way that is active and personal. I hope you can use those herbs together to create something yummy. :)

P.S. I *LOVE* your photos -- so much light. Absolutely beautiful.

That's so cute that they're growing herbs at school! I wish I'd been able to do something like that when I was in school. It's really a skill that you can carry with you into adulthood.

I'm 20 but some of my favorite summer memories come from when i get home from school in the summer and plant our herb garden with my dad.

I find that i use basil, oregano, chives and parsley the most.

Herbs are so easy to grow and really add punch to fresh salads. And they're so expensive to buy from the groccery store and always go bad so quickly and you end up wasting so much. So gardens are definitely the way to go!

Such a lovely photo Aran! I planted a large pot with herbs a few months back, and they have been doing great (except for the long hot streak this past week). I could never keep herbs alive inside, but warm sun seems to be the key! I am glad your little boy is learning a great lesson!

Love this story. Children love this. My boyfriend's son loves tending to our herb garden, and he's absolutely thrilled that the first strawberry of the season came up!

how lovely! Our mint and lemon balm just started to really grow and every time I open my kitchen door I get whiffs of their intoxicating scent! It makes me want to sleep with a bouquet of them by my bed :)

awww..so gorgeous! We go to the local farmers markets held at the local primary school and they have their own veggie patch and herbs growing in the garden. It's great to see the littlies get excited about how our food gets to our plate - and adults too, as I realised just the other day that I have wonderful 'creeper' of snow peas on my balcony - just waiting to be picked!

So sweet! And what a lovely photo. To think of all the pennies I could save if I were domestic enough to keep herbs alive...

This is the kind of story you wish you had when you get older. It's the kind that gets forgotten. I hope you hang on to these posts for him, mostly because it shows how much you love him.

How endearingly sweet! And how cool that your son's school has a garden... I wish mine had ones growing up. Luckily, both my grandma's had decent gardens... they were just very far away for us, so we only got to enjoy the fresh stuff in the summer.

Nice blog. Wish If I could intermingle between edible garden and herb garden.

What a wonderful idea of the school to encourage children to plant in an herb garden. You have such a sweet little boy, and I'm sure he'll grow up with a great appreciation of food and where it comes from.
