The Basque Countryside and Family

We arrived in Bilbao last week and we have spent every single moment with our friends and family. It is beautiful to see my children with their grandparents and cousins speaking the language I grew up speaking.

I realized how much I missed the countryside and how much it draws me in.

The Basque countryside runs into the Atlantic ocean forming a beautiful landscape of green mountains, rocky waterfronts and soft sandy beaches. The weather has been perfect with cool mornings and warm days. Sunny, blue skies with the most relaxing breeze. The perfect weather for afternoon naps.

One of my favorite spots is my uncle Javi's garden. He grows everything from tomatoes, peppers, swiss chard, lettuces, different kind of squashes, beans, strawberries, wild blackberries, apples, pears, asian pears, plums, nectarines, lemons, oranges and many more. His sheep are one of my favorite thing to photograph, although this time they were quite far away, a bit reluctant to get close to us. I'll have to write a post just about them. What a beautiful subject.

We picked all sorts of great produce and have been cooking and baking with them.

Another one of my favorite places is my aunt Bego's terrace where we all gather during summer days. In fact, I am writing from there and loving the sun on my back. She cooked dinner for us one night. A house full of people, kids playing and plenty of simply prepared delicious food. That is what Basque cooking is all about. Quality, seasonality and simplicity.

We also visited my amama Miren's childhood house where my great aunt Jone still lives. Their garden is breathtaking and to see walls full of photographs and family heirlooms always makes me go back in time.

I am off to tape Robin Food in a couple of hours. I will share more of the hundreds of photos I have been taking, but this is it for now. I can never get enough of home.

I think these images speak for themselves, don't they?

How do you think the Basque region copes with the country divide in terms of a cultural image, food etc? I know the French part quite well, but not so much south of the border.

Atmosphere well captured in these photos.

Hey Aran... really beautiful picture!!!
I'm curious...What kind of fried pepper is it (next to the octopus dish)? It reminds me to fried shishito at ippudo. Are they similar?

The Comfort of Cooking said...

Wow... I, too, grew up in the country, on a farm, and there's something so magical about going back for a visit after city, or even suburban living. These photos are magnificent, especially the last one of the child! Enjoy the rest of your vacation, and please spend as much time as you can with your family and away from the computer screen! ;)

Ainhoa- ni hemen egongo naz irailak 5 arte eta ia ikusten garen!

Laube- si, perdona es que en ingles nunca acierto con los oceanos, mares y esas cosas. soy vizcaina y se muy bien que es el cantabrico!

Brenda- that makes me so happy!

James Harris- well, there are some differences because we had a border that separated us for many years and they are ruled by different governments but we share our culture and language which are really what makes a nation. the landscape is very similar and so is the food. I just spent the day in St Jean de Luz (Donibane Lohitzun) and Sara.

Carmen- como puede ser eso! nada, la proxima vez que tengas vacances te das una buena vuelta.

David- you don't need to speak basque to come down. people here are lovely and helpful. it's only a train ride away!

Kartika- the peppers are pimientos de Gernika. they are small, sweet peppers that are fried in olive oil and served with salt. similar to pimientos del padron.

Thanks everyone!

I grew up in the country too and I can never, never forget the blessing of playing with lambs, gathering apples in my own yard, and wandering barefoot across fields. I think your heart plants parts of itself in the soil when you spend time in the country.

I had never heard of the Basque country before reading about you (years ago) but it has always seemed so charming when you write about it.
