What I could eat for the rest of my life

This morning I was answering some questions for an upcoming interview and the following question arose. “What would you eat if you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life?” I thought about it. I debated whether it would be lentils, avocado, eggs, or chocolate. Then I glanced over at our dining room table and saw a basket full of apples.

“Apples!”

For now, without a doubt, if I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life it would be these apples. The apples we picked and brought back with us from Vermont.

And you? What would you eat for the rest of your life?

I love this question because so many people instantly think chocolate or something terribly un-healthy like potato chips, but when you really start to think about it, well you would probably get really sick of those things really fast. My answer is always raspberries.

  2. Dizzy Lizzie says:

It would have to be a fruit coz i think I would get sick of everything else and it would have to be mangoes. Undoubtedly.

  3. if it wasn’t so unhealthy and made me headaches it would be chocolate, all variations of chocolate (not only the relatively healthy 70%-chocolate). or/and rasperries. the apples here in ireland are nice but better in cooked or baked recipes.

  4. Cheese – I would have to have a variety of them and I am guessing “the rest of my life” won’t be very long because of it :)

    Kel x

  5. Freshly baked bread. Crunchy on the outside, warm and soft on the inside. Mmmmm.

  6. Joy says:

Oh god yes apples…and rice. Not the two together but rice is something I can eat for the rest of my life (not just because I am Chinese). Both of the two are so versatile don’t you think?

  7. Duke says:

    Pears!
I simply love your blog. Great photography, good food, travel; what else could one wish for. It’s so refreshing. Thank you!

  8. Sandy says:

There is only one answer, olives! I’m obsessed with every good kind of them. I guess in one of my future lifes I will be an olive, hanging on an old tree in south france.
And I love olives with everything, of course with dark chocolate.

    Sandy

  9. Celeste says:

Butternut squash! Maybe it’s just a seasonal mentality, but I can’t get enough!

  10. Mónica says:

    No doubt: Ham and cheese!

  11. Krystina says:

Right now it would be pears. Beautiful, juicy, plump pears. They’re so delicious right now.

  12. bea m says:

Green beans! They’re so clean and refreshing when just picked and barely cooked.

  13. argone says:

I would say pears too … So many varieties you can pick !

  14. sweet blueberries… they are the best! just pop them in your mouth!

  15. MichaelaRae says:

Being the food lover that I am, this is way too hard of a question.

But, if I had to, if I absolutely had to, I’d say peaches.

  16. Zia Elle says:

Fruit fruit fruit, all kinds of fruits but just fruit for the rest of my life! :)

  17. Janice says:

A second for raspberries. Picked first thing in the morning when the sun is shining and just beginning to evapoate the dew. Standing and watching the sun rise with a lovely handful to savour. Heaven…

  18. coco plum says:

Good French bread & real butter!

  19. A difficult question to answer! I love apples and too many things to only limitated myself to one item, but I’d nonetheless say “cheese”!

    Cheers,

    Rosa

  20. Bread! (and cheese) (and olives) (and nuts) (and wine)

  21. Cheese!!! All kind of… definitely!!!

  22. piecurious says:

You and me both! As it is, I pretty much survive on apples. Mutsu (also known as Crispin in some places) are my absolute favorites and they are the size of your head! Of course, this means they can suffice for an entire meal. Hands down, Mutsu apples would be the one thing I would eat for the rest of my life… on a desert island, etc. etc. :)

  23. ixoj says:

I’m with you as well- apples are the one thing I could never do without!

  24. EGGS and OATMEAL and SPAGHETTI — how’s that for a random list? :)

  25. ikurriña says:

being basque and spanish… weird enough of thinking in apples.. I was thinking in our splendid vegetables (tomates, piparras, y todo lo que La Rioja ofrece), our outstanding ham, the fresh fish(anchoas), and why not in our national cheese (Idiazabal).
Lentils, avocado, OMG, where in earth do you belong??? Not here I guess

  26. definitely the same. I LOVE apples! Always.

  27. Laura says:

Hard to choose, but I would say sushi.

  28. I also love apples! I eat an apple every day! I like making apple pies and cakes. My family loves it! Here in Brazil we have plenty of types of fruit and the prices are not high. It pays to be healthy. Kisses

  29. Ikurrina- ni EHkoa naz eta gure etxean sagarrak barra barra jaten ziren/dire. Gure ingurunea sagarrondoz betea egoan. Zuk aipatzen dozuzan guzti horrek be nire zerrendan egongo ziren baina bat aukeratu behar ezkero, sagarrakaz gelditzen naz. Eta “OMG where in earth do you belong??? not here i guess” komentarioak zer esan gure dau?

Now you guys have me second guessing my choice… Raspberries, cheese, pears… unfortunately can’t have crusty bread, but sounds amazing! :)

    Thanks for sharing!

  30. Bread….the whole bread and nothing but the bread!

  31. I adore strawberrys and watermelon if its really hot in the summer. When the first berrys are offered in the store I can’t resist. I eat them with raw cane sugar and cream. That’s all I need in the morning – sun shining ;).

  32. Valeria says:

I would say a simple napolitan margherita pizza. Or red juicy tomatoes..mmmmm :)))

  33. Avacados ( : I could live off guacamole for the rest of my life! I never get tired of it.
    Thanks for the thought-provoking question!

  34. Marcos says:

I met a men in the Santiago de Compostela way in 2007.
    He was only eating raspberries.
He ate that for two weeks while he was cycling from Roncesvalles to Santiago.
    His health was really fine.

So I choose raspberry, and I like it a lot!

  35. Hazel says:

One of the most difficult questions in life… I just love everything! Houmous stands out for me but not on it’s own… so I think I’m with you on apples :)

  36. akt says:

baked plantain bananas with a sprinkling of cannelle.

  37. Apples are great, but they would not leave me ultimately sated. If I had to choose, I would have to say eggs and salad. Salade with a poached egg is about as good as it gets. Salad with apples is delicious, too! I love potatoes, because there are so many wonderful things you can do with them, particularly if you have onions and bacon, or cream and seasalt! I guess the answer is that we are incredibly fortunate to be the beneficiaries of a kingly diet, with great variety, the combination of which makes for unending interest and pleasure. Bon Appetit, and keep up the great work on your inspiring blog!

  38. diana banana says:

there are a lot of answers of mango, but i would put that 2nd. i could eat chilled watermelon for the rest of my life, hands down.

  39. Mags says:

Pears. I love love love pears, although if I could have some wiggle room (and be a little less specific) I’d go with cheese, every kind ever. That would be one good life I think.

  40. Had a similar conversation with a friend yesterday. Would answering ‘pig’ be cheating?

  41. Tina says:

I’m going for the unhealthy because, if I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, I’m not sure I’d want to live to a very old age…I love food, so many different foods during different seasons.

So, that being said, I’d gorge myself on pumpkin pie with whipped cream!

  42. Tina says:

I will go for the completely unhealthy because, if I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, I’m not sure I’d want it to be a very long one. I love food, different types of food during different seasons.

So, that being said, I would gorge myself on pumpkin pie with loads of whipped cream!

  43. Apples, 100%! They are the one food I absolutely could not live without. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. In my case this usually ends up being 2 or 3 per day! Whether it be Jona Gold, Ambrosia or Honey Crisp, my existence would be incomplete without them!

  44. Serenity says:

What a healthy bunch who have commented so far! It’s reminding me of the importance of fruit intake. As for what I could eat forever and ever — Popcorn! I can’t get enough. I make the stove top kind, with a bit of heated olive oil, organic popping kernels. Once popped, I sprinkle with a bit of herbed sea salt. Yummmy. I’m going to make myself a batch right now. : )

  45. Barbara says:

Fresh crusty loaf of bread…and butter.

My list is eggs, cheese, apples, cheeseburgers, avocado….But in the end it may just be eggs.

  61. the good: peaches; quinoa; Greek yogurt!
    the bad: bacon; cheese; chocolate!

  62. a. maren says:

toast! sourdough toast with butter. easy.

I would eat potatoes for the rest of my life…french fries, mashed potatoes, ANY type of potatoes…hmmm

  64. katealice says:

wow this is harder than I thought it would be. I think I’ll have to say olives. Something inherited from my Nonno, I think :)

  65. I DONT KNOW!!! I’ve been thinking for more than an hour and i really dont know. I love food so much that i cant choose one thing!!!! ^))

Apples or strawberries. Though I’d throw honey, bread, and shrimp in there as well if I could.

  77. Sini says:

Oh how could I ever choose?

  78. Ula says:

Shrimp or baguette with french butter!:)

  79. Unknown says:

    cheese. I would die happy.

  80. Thank GOD I don’t have to really make this decision! Of course my mind immediately wants to know: are we talking one ingredient, or one dish? Because I would feel much better in my body if I could eat several ingredients together. If the latter were the case then I would choose a vegetable omelette with cheese and avacado. That way I could have something delicious AND nutritious at the same time. I’m not over-anylitical or anything…

  81. I think I’d never live without chocolates! :D

“What would you eat for the rest of your life?”

That’s kinda hard to answer. Hmm.. Maybe mangoes? Mangoes here in our country are the best! Or pasta, anything that’s tomato-based. Or potatoes? :D

BTW, just chanced upon your blog and I’m glad I found it. Great blog!

I am trying to figure out how to lower my cholesterol and apples are a great snack for doing this! Healthy and filling! I am a fan of Granny Smith’s myself. I think it is the snap and sourness that makes them more satisfying.

  87. My husband and I once went up to Mt. Hood to stay in a rustic lodge for my birthday celebration. It started to snow the following morning, and we got into the car and drove around some of the mountain roads. It was stunningly beautiful! We came across an apple farm that had big barrels of apples floating in water. We each chose an apple and when we bit into them, it was almost like a religious experience! They were the very best apples we have ever eaten….including before that experience or after!

Apples, yum. My favorites are Fuji and Honeycrisps..

  88. ohhhh that’s a tough question to answer!!! there is so many things to chose from…i am not a one kind favorite food…i am more to have a bite from everything and anything:)
apple is always a good choice!

  89. I would love to eat almonds for the rest of my life <3

  90. Livia says:

Bread! By definition, eating only one thing is unhealthy, but even now, not a day goes by without me having some bread, so I guess I’d say that. And I’d miss all the rest a lot!
Nice touch on the apples though. Thx for the blog and the lovely pictures

  91. Juliana says:
