Walking around Gothenburg

EDOC1320EDOC1139

When I first started taking pictures of food, I hoarded food and travel magazines. I stared at beautiful photography and tried to analyze the light, the photographers point of view…

…trying to decipher their technique and how they worked the light.

I discovered Mikkel Vang‘s work in that process. His editorial stories for Donna Hay, Vogue Living, Elle Decor, Gourmet and so many more are evoking, lush, colorful – always telling a story of people, places and food.

This passed weekend I was fortunate to be able to attend a workshop taught by Mikkel where we learned about light, storytelling and photography. We walked the streets of Gothenburg with eyes wide open looking for light, hidden corners, food and people to create a storyboard of the city.

What an amazing experience this was for me. Still fresh in my mind. Left filled with inspiration, new tools and ideas.

I will be in Sweden for a few more days.

Headed to Katrineholm next where I will be teaching a food styling and photography workshop myself. We will be staying at a lake house and exploring the areas food culture and environment. Ola Rudin will be joining and guiding us on a foraging tour and discovery of the areas wild foods. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am about this.

There is still nearly another month for me in Europe. After Sweden, the Basque Country.

Can I tell you how envious I am right now? You are basking in the sun in a beautiful place and we’re freezing and stuck with flooding. :-) I wish you all the best for your workshop, and I eagerly await your pictures- especially the ones about the foraging part of the workshop.

I’ve been to Finland, Norway and Denmark – but Sweden is missing…one day I’ll go. I love Scandinavia. Will your kids be joining you in the Basque country? Are they done with school yet? School finishes in 2.5 weeks for us and I look forward to a slower pace. Have a great time!

  9. Enviable! I’d like to be there too. Looks as if you had great company. This peony photo reminds me of paintings in the style of the old masters from Holland.
But I like best the picture where you lie and stand in this sun-drenched meadow. For me it symbolizes having a good time with friends full of happiness and peace. Isn’t that what we all want to have here on earth?

  10. Katie says:

It’s so refreshing and inspiring to hear that someone as talented as you (talented enough to run your own high-demand workshops!) is still out there growing and learning from others. Thanks for sharing such a lovely experience with us!

…. I’m American living in Sweden learning more about my camera every day. I love your approach to photography and would have loved to join! I’m in Stockholm and will look for more glimpses of how your eye sees Sweden! The photos you’ve taken of Goteborg truly feel like Goteborg! Fantastic and I’m wondering if this means that you’ll be here long enough to explore Midsummer? A feast of color and emotion for a photographer! If you were in need of shooting a Stockholm big summer, find us!! :-) open tables with midsummer food aplenty!
